The Musical Plays of Rabindranath Tagore is a documentary film which explores the seven musical plays written by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore during his lifetime and tries to find out whether they are still relevant in today’s time.
This documentary film features interviews, enactments, photos, visuals as well as appropriate and relevant sound tracks interwoven with the narration in the film. The film also explores Tagore’s philosophies and the thought processes behind his musical plays. Overall, it is a documentation as well as a qualitative analysis of his creations with the focus clearly on his musical plays or dance dramas. The musical plays, popularly known in Bengali as Nritya Natyas and Geeti Natyas, shown in this film are –

Mahishasuramardini – A Passage Through Time

Mahishasuramardini – A Passage Through Time is a documentary film which traces the creation and evolution of the legendary radio programme Mahishasuramardini, broadcast annually on the auspicious day of Mahalaya, preceding the autumnal Durga Puja. This oratorio written by Banikuma, set to tune by Pankaj Kumar Mullick and narrated by Birendra Krishna Bhadra has been broadcast annually since 1931. In 1977, the programme was taken off air which led to a public uproar and was eventually broadcast that year on the day of Maha Shashthi. So it may be said that this programme has had an uninterrupted run since 1931. Several eminent singers and musicians were part of this legendary programme.

The only interview of Pankaj Mullick in colour is a part of this documentary film made in 1977 and released in 1979 by Films Division, Govt. of India. Several eminent film personalities pay tribute to Pankaj Mullick in this film. A short life-sketch of the music maestro is also featured in this documentary.
